A little bit of sun and I could fry an egg in my hair. I only doubt if it is excellent, so instead, I wash my hair anyway.

Now it was every other day, and sometimes with a bit of luck I could cram in for two days, but before that, I had to wash my hair day after day. Does that sound recognizable to you? I hope not, but I know that I am not the only one with this problem. And you are probably just like me continually looking for ways to curb that greasiness, so to help you in your fight against greasy hair I have listed some of my facts and tips for you. After all, together we are stronger! It helped me; hopefully, it helps you too.

Tallow and the Tallow production

The ‘oily’ of oily hair that is sebum. Grease is our hair and skin oil, which is produced by sebaceous glands that are in our skin. Sebaceous glands can almost always be found on the nose and therefore end up on the same pore. Not all of our body has the same number of sebaceous glands: There are many sebaceous glands on your back, scalp, and facial skin. And none at all on your foot and hand soles. They can also vary in size. On a square cm skin, there are on average 15 sebaceous glands.

So how much sebum is produced, among other things, has to do with how many are in one place and how large they are, but also with sex hormones that influence the sebum production and the sensitivity of your sebaceous glands.

Tallow can be a pain-in-the-ass, but it is essential. It ensures that your skin and hair remain hydrated, nice and smooth & soft and it also offers protection against harmful external influences, including even bacteria, fungi, and other woes. Normally it should be distributed throughout your hair, from the root to your tips, but because we wash our hair, we have disrupted this natural process of our body. That can explain why we people in our society have oily hair, while other animal species and people in some other (shampoo-free) cultures are not bothered by it at all.

Possible Causes of Oily Hair

  • Hormones and the sensitivity of your sebaceous glands (often genetically determined)
  • Overactive sebaceous glands (they have gone a bit crazy, often with a hormonal cause)
  • Many and large sebaceous glands (genetically determined)
  • Stress (affects your hormones)
  • Pregnancy (hormones, that’s where the famous pregnancy flow comes from)
  • Puberty (your hormones go berserk and the sebaceous glands mature)
  • Food (for example, some people suffer more from dairy and pork)
  • Wash too often or with too strong shampoo (sebaceous glands compensate for sebum deficiency)
  • Too little sleep (affects your hormones)
  • Poor health (affects your hormones)
  • Medications (some affect your hormones)
  • Fine and straight hair (you see the sebum much faster, and it spreads more easily)
  • The weather/climate (eg, heat or seasonal change stimulates the taste of the talents)
  • Heat & heating (dries out your hair and skin and compensates for sebaceous glands)
  • Your skin color (If you have a darker skin tone, the chances are that you have relatively oily skin and oily hair. Extra sebum serves on the one hand as protection against the sun and dehydration. But also for your curls – if you have one-, because they are often a bit drier because tallow is more challenging to distribute, but even if you have a light skin color this can be very good, and it doesn’t always have to be the case if you have a darker skin color.)
